Exhortations from the Prophets

Our nation once stood on Biblical grounds. How grieved are we that as a nation we move increasingly further from God’s standard?

-Ezekiel 11:12 And you will know that I am the Lord, for you have not followed my decrees or kept my laws but have conformed to the standards of the nations around you.

The prophets of old spoke to the nation of Israel about the coming judgment of God. We can expect Him to be consistent in His judgment of what is happening today in the world, our country and among Christians. We should be grieved by what we see that disregards the Word of God.

-Ezekiel 9:4: “Go throughout the city of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of those who grieve and lament over all the detestable things that are done in it.”

We grieve God with our rebellion against Him. We have yielded to pressure to be tolerant of sin against our Holy God. But God will not yield or tolerate sin.

-Isaiah 63:10 Yet they rebelled and grieved his Holy Spirit. So he turned and became their enemy and he himself fought against them.

Our tolerance will not change God.

-Malachi 3:6 I the Lord do not change.

He is a forgiving God, when we repent and turn from our sin. It is not too late yet, but we are promised that at some point judgment will come and each will stand individually before God. He provided our Savior Jesus Christ to cover our sin when we turn to Him in repentance and faith.

-Ezekiel 18:30-32 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you, each one according to his ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!

When we examine our ways in light of His Word, we see how different our ways are from His ways. God provided the only solution in Jesus Christ. He is the entry point of our (re)turning to the Lord.

-Lamentations 3:40 Let us examine our ways and test them, and let us return to the Lord.

Do not wait. Return to God. Individual repentance can change the course of nations. Stand for the One who is eternal and waits for you.

-Malachi 3:7 “Return to me and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty.

Seek Wisdom

When I was speaking with a salesperson on the phone recently, I paused several times to consider what she was offering. She was not accustomed to the silence and would say, Hello? To which I replied, I’m thinking. I did not want to make an emotional decision, but a thoughtful one.

How much more I need to pause in my conversations with my friends and family, to give the Spirit of God time to get a thought in edgewise.

After some recent failures to communicate with wisdom, I have made myself this cue card: listen, pause & think (give Holy Spirit time to get word in edgewise), fear God (not man), control self (not others), take up my cross and follow Jesus.

The wisdom of God is not far from us. The Word of God is so accessible in our country today. The Holy Spirit is ever ready to provide what we need to demonstrate wisdom. By acquiring wisdom we are promised “a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair”,* and “life and favor from the Lord”.**
